Chandigarh ₹1.01-crore extortion case

A dismissed Chandigarh police officer, Davinder Singh, has surrendered before a local court in Mohali in connection with a ₹1.01-crore extortion case. Singh had been on the run since he was suspended from the force in August 2021.

According to the police, Singh had extorted the money from a businessman in Mohali by posing as a top official from the Enforcement Directorate. He had allegedly threatened the businessman with a false money laundering case and demanded the money as a bribe to clear his name.

The businessman had approached the police after paying the money, and an investigation was launched into the matter. The police had traced Singh's involvement in the case, and he was subsequently dismissed from the force.

After evading arrest for several months, Singh finally surrendered before the court on Friday. He was accompanied by his lawyer and his family members.

Singh's surrender has come as a relief to the police, who had been conducting searches across several states to apprehend him. Speaking to the media, a senior police official said, "We have been on the lookout for him for a long time, and were finally able to get him. He will be produced before the court, and we will seek his custody for further investigation."

The court has remanded Singh to police custody for five days. The investigation into the case is ongoing, and the police are looking into the possibility of Singh's involvement in other cases of extortion.

The case has sent shockwaves through the Chandigarh police force and raised questions about the efficacy of the department's disciplinary policies. The incident has also highlighted the need for stricter measures to prevent corruption within the police force.

The accused police officer is now facing serious charges, and the court's decision will be closely watched by both law enforcement agencies and the general public. It remains to be seen how the case will unfold in the days to come.
